How does an Echocardiogram Work?
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create pictures of the heart. It can show blood flow through the heart and heart valves using a standard ultrasound or Doppler ultrasound.
This is different from an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) that records the electrical signal from the heart to check for different heart conditions. The echocardiogram creates pictures of the heart.
What Does an Echocardiogram Find?
Your health care provider can use the pictures from the test to find heart disease and other heart conditions.
An echocardiogram can help detect:
- Damage from a heart attack
- If the supply of blood to the heart was suddenly blocked
- Signs of heart failure
- If the heart is not pumping enough blood at the right pressure
- Congenital heart disease or birth defects that affect the normal workings of the heart
Am I a Candidate for an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is done to look for heart problems. Your primary care provider may order this test if you have chest pain or shortness of breath.
What to Expect with a Echocardiogram?
This is a routine procedure that usually takes anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes. You will wear a gown and the provider will clean the chest area thoroughly, applying gel. You’ll lie down on your side and try to relax comfortably while the imaging is analyzed. A Cardiologist may discuss your condition throughout the test or ask you questions. You will receive the test results shortly following the test and discuss them with your cardiologist.
